During this time of uncertainty and fear, so many people are without jobs, money, and food. It is a scary time for everyone, but especially those who do not have a backup plan. In times like these, it is crucial that we stick together and help those that need it.
Here in Sámara, the community is doing just that. Being such a small community that relies so heavily on tourism, the quarantine has taken its toll on the economy here. What does that mean for locals who work in the tourism and hospitality industry? Unfortunately it means that many of them are without work and an income for the foreseeable future.
In light of these hard times, the community of Samara has come together and created a group called Samara Ayudando Samara (Samara Helping Samara). This is a Facebook group in which people can write about families in the area that need extra help. From these posts, the people of Samara can gather food, supplies, and necessities and deliver them to those who need it.
They have set up donation boxes in each of the supermarkets so that as people are buying their groceries, they can buy a little extra and donate to these families. To date of this post, the group has collected over 550,000 colones in cash donations and has provided food and necessities for almost 50 families.
