Our Mariposa 2016 class of massage therapists has had a busy month! With the first quarter of classes finished, and a 100% pass rate on final exams for Anatomy & Physiology and Western Techniques I, this group is proving they are serious students.

Kayak and Snorkeling Tour and Guided Meditation on Isla Chora

p1020762 September 5th, Director, Tess McGrath, surprised the students with a kayak and snorkeling tour to the white sand beach of Isla Chora in Samara Bay. They participated in a p1020765discussion and guided meditation.

The subject of the meditation was letting go of fear to create space for success.  Some of the students had never ocean kayaked before and thus this activity helped them conquer their fears!

Community Massage and Tamales Workshop in Santo Domingo

img_7806Last Saturday, September 10th, the Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy teamed up with Andrea Keith, Executive Director of Asociación CREAR, and provided free massage to the community.  CREAR is a local non-profit thatimg_7822 provides supplemental education to children and adults in Samara and surrounding areas. Part of what the group does is organize volunteer events, and CRSMT has made a donation to CREAR on behalf of the Mariposa 2016 class as a thank you for coordinating our event.

img_7673The event took place in a small village atop a beautiful hillside overlooking Samara and Carrillo Bays. The massage students provided free massages to overimg_7841 40 community members of the community and then did a cooking workshop. The workshop included preparation and assembly of Costa Rican Tamales – a traditional dish of meat and vegetables wrapped in corn masa all wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.

Samara Massage Center Student Clinic is Open to the Public

The community in Samara has shown amazing support for the students by scheduling massages at our Samara Massage Center facebook-profile-picthroughout the week.

The center features beautifully appointed treatment rooms equipped with air conditioning and relaxing music. And, we typically have 15-25 appointments available daily.

To book appointments, clients can stop by the center, call 2656-0491, or book online. The clinic will run Monday through Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM until the end of the Mariposa class in November.

Instructor Spotlight – Vickie Torrey

Vickie Torrey, MBA, MHA, LMBT is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist with 26 years experience in therapeutic massage and over 26 years experience as a Counselor/Certified Social Worker. Ms. Torrey has previously served as Director of Education for the North Carolina Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), taught massage and movement for Omega Institute of Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York, and wrote for the Charlotte Post a monthly newspaper column entitled “Hands On Health,” that focused on massage, bodywork and mind-body psychology. She teaches classes in Hot Stone, Intuitive, and Oncology Massage in Brazil, Costa Rica, and the US. Vickie is currently a faculty member at Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy in Samara Beach, Costa Rica where she teaches Ethics and Communications and Oncology Massage.
